I Rescued [Stuffed] Animals!

My mom made me the majority of my stuffed animals. While on a hunt for long-lost boxes of Sculpey today, I came across a bag of perfectly-good stuffed animals that were quite endangered! Who knows when a burglar possum’s going to break into a shed and hold all its stuffed animals hostage, or kidnap them because of their irresistible cuteness?

Yep, that’s a crab playing a violin.

Artists of the Month: August ’10

Through my 21 years of existence on planet Earth, I think it’s safe to say that just about anything can be turned into “art”. Sure, we have established “art” areas (such as “illustration” and “painting”), then we’ve got the “fine arts” (which can be an installation of just about anything,  so long as it’s backed by a deeper meaning) — but what about the art of something ordinary– say, cake making?

Mine Eyes! They See!

So I went to the optometrist today, dreading that the doctor would tell me that I should really be at a higher prescription for my glasses/contacts, and that I would have to fight back to keep my prescription at a -1.50 level.

A curious thing about my case– I only wear a contact in my left eye. My right eye sees fine, despite a slight astigmatism.

The last time I got my eyes checked, some three or so years ago, I was told that I should start wearing contacts in both eyes, and my prescription was getting a little worse. I’ve noticed lately that my left eye (the one with the contact) has been seeing pretty good– not perfect, but pretty close to perfect when wearing the lens.

So what does the doctor tell me? Despite spending the last two years in cubicles, focusing on animation paper no further than a foot from my face, that my eyesight’s actually improved in my left eye! How much? Half a point– I should be at a -1.00, but that’s quite a jump from -1.50, so she brought me down to -1.25 for the time being.

I’m so happy about this that I had to blog about it πŸ™‚ The tree leaves and details in the mountains had never been so crisp as they were on that car ride home today, wearing the weaker lens.

Moral of the story? Get your daily dose of antioxidants (green tea for the win! Dried blueberries, too,) take your lutein vitamins and just you watch your eyesight improve πŸ™‚

Sketchbooks Through 11 Years

So I got this crazy idea. How far have I come, artistically, through the years– and in what increments? What if I took photos of mid-July drawings in all my sketchbooks, clear back to ’99? And then let’s say that I publish all these drawings (no matter how embarrassing they are) onto a blog? I thought it would be fun.
2010: Here’s where we stand today… Taking the rules and breaking them.

Out with the Old

What’s going on? Tahnee.org’s home page is… GONE!

Never fear. There’s a lot of old stuff that’s got to be weeded out, and this blog needs to be integrated better into the main site. Hence the reboot… Which may take a little while to design and put up. But, when it’s finished, all the content will be fresh and happy!

Playing Piano

I have a theory.
–What’s that?
That playing piano hinders carpal tunnel syndrome.
–Oh?? Why?
Because you’re not playing the same two notes over (hopefully…) Instead, you’re playing individual notes, complex chords, and are basically doing finger acrobatics.
When drawing or typing, the hand is doing the same thing over and over, with minor differences. When playing piano, it’s doing all sorts of variations of different actions.
My goal’s to practice every day. That should make drawing a lot easier πŸ˜€

That’s a photo of my piano. It’s been through some battles.

Buzzing fly synesthesia

What on Earth is that?!!

That’s what the horsefly in my room sounds like visually. The fly approached me and flew past my left ear.

–Say what?!

I’ve got synesthesia, which is basically a misfiring of synapses that makes a person experience one sense through means of a different sense, or multiple senses. I “see” sound in my mind’s eye. It’s involuntary and it only goes one way: I can hear something (say a noise or a song) and “see” it, but I can’t look at an abstract painting and “hear” it (but Kandinsky could)! I still hear the sound, of course– that’s what triggers the visual.

I can, to a degree, “hear” visuals: I always need to listen extra hard when I’ve got sunglasses on, because everything gets quieter.

And lots of loud music seems to make a place brighter than it is– though conversing with music on is really difficult because I need to separate the visuals of the music from the visuals of the voice/words.

Other forms of synesthesia I have are grapheme-color, touch-visual and on occasion, taste-visual and scent-visual, too (mainly if I’m expecting to taste/smell one thing but get something completely different).

Questions about synesthesia are more than welcome. From now on I’ll try to make blog posts about the visuals I get!

Artists of the Month: July ’10

It’s been too long! Time to start this blog series up again. Though some artists may be popular, they may only be popular amongst their own circle of like-minded artists. It’s time to cross the artistic boundaries, and that’s why I’ve decided to re-start the Artists of the Month.
