When I started at CalArts I decided I wanted to do a cute
little romance cartoon for my first year film. After boarding it out, I
realized that the characters didn't have bodies that would be very exciting
to animate. I had drawn a quick illustration
in my sketchbook of a "thug" and a "painter".
I wondered-- what would be the interaction between these two characters?
I made a short
animation test in Flash of the Thug tossing his bucket of paint, and
then the paint turned into birds and hit a wall. I decided then that this
is what the visual premise of my film would be.
I wanted to make two films originally, but after starting my second semester,
I quickly saw that I wouldn't have the time to pull that off. Then a story
developed around those two characters in the illustration, and I decided
that the film would be a metaphor for how people need to be more open-minded.
